Il fut en 1956 le plus jeune champion du monde des lourds de l'histoire, record qu'il conservera durant 30 ans.Champion olympique des poids moyens en 1952 à Helsinki, il est en 1956 le 1er champion olympique à devenir champion du monde des poids lourds. Âgé de 21 ans, il devient alors le plus jeune champion du monde des poids lourds de l'histoire, un record qu'il conserve jusqu'en 1986, année où Mike Tyson est sacré champion du monde à 20 ans et 5 mois. Floyd Patterson et Mike Tyson ont été tous les deux entrainés par Cus D'Amato.Après une série de défenses victorieuses de son titre, il est battu par le Suédois Ingemar Johansson en 1959. Il prend sa revanche l'année suivante, victoire qu'il confirme lors de leur 3e affrontement en 1961.En 1962, il perd à nouveau son titre, cette fois face à Sonny Liston. Il échouera ensuite à toutes ses tentatives de reconquête du titre poids lourds. Une défaite face à Mohamed Ali le convaincra à 37 ans de se retirer des rings.
