Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli, meglio noto come Joey Maxim (Cleveland, 28 marzo 1922 – West Palm Beach, 2 giugno 2001), è stato un pugile statunitense, campione del mondo dei mediomassimi dal 1950 al 1951 e dal 1951 al 1952. È l'unico pugile ad aver sconfitto Sugar Ray Robinson prima del limite, sia pure nell'unico combattimento combattuto da quest'ultimo nella superiore categoria dei mediomassimi e in circostanze particolari.Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli nacque a Cleveland, Ohio, figlio di emigranti italiani. Imparò a boxare da giovanissimo ed ebbe un'ottima carriera da dilettante nei pesi medi. Nel 1940 vinse i Golden Gloves di Chicago, gli Intercity Golden Gloves e il campionato nazionale AAU. Il nome da combattimento "Joey Maxim" gli fu attribuito in omaggio alla Maxim, la prima mitragliatrice automatica al mondo, per la sua abilità nel colpire l'avversario con serie rapidissime di jab di sinistro. Passò al professionismo nel 1941, a diciannove anni, nei pesi mediomassimi. Tra l'ottobre e il dicembre 1942 subì una doppia sconfitta ai punti dal futuro campione del mondo dei pesi massimi, Ezzard Charles, che allora combatteva nei mediomassimi. Nel 1946, da mediomassimo, batté ai punti l'altro futuro campione del mondo dei massimi Jersey Joe Walcott, più pesante di sei kg. L'anno dopo fu organizzato un doppio incontro Maxim-Walcott per designare lo sfidante al grande Joe Louis per il titolo mondiale dei massimi. Walcott vinse in entrambi i casi ma con verdetto contrastato ai punti. Seguì una nuova sconfitta ai punti, con verdetto non unanime, contro Ezzard Charles. Di conseguenza, Walcott e Charles si sfidarono per l'attribuzione del titolo dei massimi, lasciato vacante da Louis, che fu vinto da Walcott.Maxim venne allora designato per l'attribuzione del titolo nordamericano dei pesi mediomassimi, contro l'anziano Gus Lesnevich, già campione del mondo della categoria e nominato Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year per l'anno 1947. Il 10 agosto 1949, l'italoamericano vinse ai punti con verdetto unanime.
